Our minibuses are more than just an efficient transport solution; they’re an investment for your school or business. If your minibus is going to be left alone for a long period this summer, there’s a few things to know to make sure it keeps running smoothly for years to come, and you get the most out of your investment.

1. Ensure the battery doesn’t run flat

You'll want to run the engine for at least fifteen minutes per week to prevent the battery dying.

You could also consider removing the battery and using a trickle charger to top it up battery if nobody will be on-site to run the engine – you could even consider a solar powered charger to avoid using unnecessary electricity. If your vehicle is maintained with CVM, you can call our 24/7 driverline on 0344 573 3120 if you need assistance.

2. Implement a maintenance schedule

Caring for your minibus is much more than just responding to issues as they crop up – it’s important to be organised, and adhering to the recommended service schedule in the manufacturer guide is important. A professional mechanic will inspect the vehicle thoroughly, replacing any deteriorated components and topping up necessary fluids such as engine oil, brake fluid and windscreen washer.

Making a detailed maintenance schedule and logging the work that’s been carried out will help keep the minibus on the road. It’s easiest to carry out your maintenance at regular time intervals, but it’s important to keep track of the mileage your minibus does. This is because your garage will likely give you a recommended amount of miles that should not be exceeded before the next service, so if you exceed this, you should book in a service as soon as possible.

However - if you’re using CVM maintenance, we’ll always remind you when your minibus is due for safety inspections or a service, making this whole process easier.

3. Ensure any MOTs are carried out on time

It’s important to remember that minibuses need their MOTs carried out after only one year on the road, rather than the standard three years for other vehicle types. Of course, if you opt for maintenance, you will receive MOT reminders, and can book in via the 24/7 driverline on 0344 573 3120. There are different types of MOT which you’ll need to be familiar with to ensure your minibus has the correct, valid certificate.

  • Class IV tests are carried out at any appointed garage, and are carried out on any vehicle operated under Section 19 or 10B permits, with up to 12 passenger seats.
  • Class V tests are carried out on minibuses which have 13 or more passenger seats. They must be undertaken at designated premises or approved testing facilities which are authorised to carry out commercial vehicle tests.

4. Don’t leave safety inspections until the last minute

Don’t delay! Even if you’ve done all of the above, it’s still best to arrange for your minibus to be thoroughly inspected by a professional at least 1-2 weeks before it’s due to be back on the road, in case any repairs need to be carried out.

If we look after your safety inspections, we’ll remind you of them well in advance to allow you plenty of time to schedule them in. The section 19/22 permit for minibus drivers stipulates that basic checks are carried out before driving, so while it’s not a necessity, keeping this up over the summer can help diagnose faults early so they can be sorted in time for the new school year.
